All About Photo Presents The Winners of All About Photo Awards 2021 - The Mind's Eye

The prestigious photo competition, “All About Photo Awards 2020, The Mind’s Eye,”, organized by All About Photo is pleased to reveal the winning photographers of 2021.

A panel of 10 expert jurors including: Keith Cullen (Founder Setanta Books), Denis Dailleux (Photographer, Agency VU’), Stefano De Luigi (Photographer, VII Agency), Monica Denevan (Photographer, Winner All About Photo Awards 2020), Claudine Doury (Photographer, Agency VU’), Ann Jastrab (Executive Director, Center for Photographic Art), Sandrine Hermand-Grisel(Photographer, Founder All About Photo), Stephan Vanfleteren (Photographer, Writer & Art-director of Hannibal Books), Hiroshi Watanabe (Photographer), and Alison Wright (Photographer & Author) have selected the 40 winning photographs.

The 6th annual competition attracted an extremely high caliber of photographers from around the world. The winners come from 23 different countries and 5 continents.

2020 was a peculiar year with the COVID-19 pandemic, of course, but also with the Australian and US West Coast Wildfires, the popular uprisings in Hong Kong, Columbia, Chile and Venezuela, The Black Live Matters protests, the explosion in Beirut...  Yet the idealism of past years has not been completely tarnished and the images submitted show the rich diversity of our planet, with photographs ranging from a Porter in Kolkata to the human cost of COVID-19 in Indonesia. From underwater life in Japan to Irish Travelers. Or from a detention center in Latin-America to a fishing boat in Vietnam... Crossing borders, spanning cultures, and traversing the most remote corners of the world, the featured photographers all captured life in its most vivid forms.

The winner and Photographer of the Year 2021 is Tom Price (UK) with his image "Porter" taken from a series of surreal portraits, featuring 'relocated' porters from Kolkata, as a reflection on the experience of migrant workers.

The second-place winner is Joshua Irwandi (Indonesia), the third-place winner is Joseph-Philippe Bevillard (Ireland), the fourth-place winner Javier Arcenillas (Spain) and the fifth-place winner is Javier Vergara (Chile).

The prestigious photo competition, All About Photo Awards - The Mind's Eye, organized by All About Photo is pleased to reveal the winning photographers of 2020.

A panel of 7 expert jurors including Elizabeth Avedon (Photography book and exhibition designer, independent curator and writer), Laurent Baheux (Photographer, UN Ambassador for the environment and active protector of wildlife), Alex Cammarano (Founder and CEO of Daylighted), Julia Dean (Photographer, Educator, Writer, and Executive Director/ Founder of the Los Angeles Center of Photography - LACP), Sandrine Hermand-Grisel (Photographer, Founder & Editor of All About Photo), Ann Jastrab (Executive Director, Center for Photographic Art, Carmel, CA), and Juli Lowe(Director, Catherine Edelman Gallery) selected the 40 winning photographs.

The 5th annual competition attracted an extremely high caliber of photographs from around the world.

The majority of this year's submissions were color photographs and yet 4 of the 5 first place images are B&W. Unlike previous years, it also seems that the jurors were more attracted to beautiful and soothing images rather than violent and unsettling ones. Perhaps a subconscious need has arisen in each one of us to escape the terrible events that are happening in the world right now. It is also worth noting that photography is often perceived as an art form still dominated by men, but this edition proves the contrary! Four out of the top five prizes have been won by women photographers!

The winner and Photographer of the Year 2020 is Monica Denevan (USA) with her image Across the River, Burma from the series Songs of the River: Portraits from Burma.

The second-place winner is Gabriele Galimberti (Italy), the third-place winner is Rebecca Moseman (USA), the fourth-place winner Nadia De Lange (Switzerland) and the fifth-place winner is Nicole Cambre (Belgium).

Which doesn't undermine the incredible work by: Marcel van Balken (Netherlands), Alain Schroeder (Belgium), Rory Doyle (USA), Azim Khan Ronnie (Bangladesh), Tomas Neuwirth (Czech Republic), Trung Pham Huy (Vietnam), Tony Law (Australia), Matthew Portch (Australia), Amos Chapple (New Zealand), Mustafa AbdulHadi (Bahrain), Francisco Diaz (USA), Kosuke Kitajima (Japan), Xiangli Zhang (China), Chin Leong Teo (Japan), Donell Gumiran (United Arab Emirates), Andre Fonseca (USA), Francesco Pace Rizzi (Italy), Peyman Naderi (Iran), Yoni Blau (Israel), Zay Yar Lin (Myanmar), Anuar Patjane (Mexico), Hardijanto Budiman (Indonesia), Svetlin Yosifov (Bulgaria), Dotan Saguy (USA), Kohei Ueno (Japan) and Go Nakamura (USA)

The winners of All About Photo Awards 2019 are live!

First of all, I would like to express my deepest thanks to our amazing jurors. It was a privilege to be able to work alongside Elizabeth Avedon, Alex Cammarano, Laura Geiser, Henry Horenstein, Ann Jastrab, Maxim Panés, John Rankin, Anna Van Lenten, John Rankin and Tariq Zaidi as co-jurors for this 2019 edition of the All About Photo Awards – The Mind’s Eye. Knowing how important it is to have one’s work acknowledged by our peers, it was a humbling experience to benefit from their experience and sharp eye.  All About Photo couldn’t thrive without the kindness and support of our amazing jurors. Thanks to their dedication, we can stay true to our goal of discovering existing and new talents and to help them gain the recognition and exposure they deserve.

The All About Photo Awards is an event that I look forward to each year. Thousands of images I have never seen before scroll on my computer screen to my delight. Occasionally there are images that have captivated me before and I thrill to see them anew. It is a fascinating experience and yet a difficult one at the same time. Being a photographer myself, I find it sometimes hard to judge the work of others when I know how challenging it can be to express a vision, to capture an instant, to stand out from the crowd.

When you have to review almost 4,000 images, in the end each juror’s choice is subjective and echoes their sensibilities. Our favorite images might not have always been the same, but after all the judging, we found out that whatever our preferences, some images stood out because of their compelling subjects or their undeniable quality. This is how we came up with the 35 winning images. There were many more that would have been showcased in the winner’s gallery if we could have featured more selections. That is the reason why, not only did I want to feature the winning images in this special edition of AAP Magazine, but also some of the others that were just a step from the podium. It will give you an idea of the amazing work that was submitted this year.

Whether your work is featured in this edition of AAP Magazine or not, I am grateful to all the photographers for submitting their work to the All About Photo Awards. Thank you for allowing us to discover so many incredible images, for enabling us to travel, laugh, hold our breath, wonder, think about the world we live in and the endless possibilities of the art of photography. It was a long, but fascinating journey. I hope we will be able to discover more of your incredible projects in the near future. All About Photo wouldn't exist without you.

Exlusive interview with Tariq Zaidi

After winning All About Photo Awards 2018, I had the privilege to talk with Tariq Zaidi.
You can discover the full interview: HERE

All About Photo: First of all, congratulations for being All About Photo's 2018 Photographer of the Year! Could you tell us what was the determining factor in submitting your work for this specific contest?

Tariq Zaidi:Thank you. I am extremely humbled and very honored to have been awarded All About Photo's 2018 Photographer of the Year. Thank you, AAP and the Jury panel for recognizing my work.

The work I submitted was half from my recent 2017 reportage work from Brazil, Congo and North Korea – together with other images from travels before which may be considered more as travel photography – hoping to provide the Jury with a balanced overview of my work.

AAP: In 2014 you gave up a senior corporate position to become a full time photographer. What triggered this decision?

Tariq Zaidi:After almost 20 years in business/corporate world - I was so tired of the corporate environment, it was just killing me and I felt like I was going to die if I kept doing this, I need to live, do what I love and give it a shot.

A friend of mine who is a professional photographer, who is very successful said to me 'Do you know how hard it is to become a professional photographer? Because just in London alone there are something like 22,000 photographers who are trying to make a living, you are just not going to make it, it's just so hard. Before you quit your job make sure you have enough money to somehow survive for the next three to five years because you are not going to get anywhere for at least 5 years and that's if you are damm good & lucky'. You know what, I just said 'perfect' I love that challenge and I'm going to go for it irrespective of what you say. I set myself targets and financial budgets, like I can only spend this much this year as I need to buy a computer, I need to buy software, I need to buy a camera, it all costs a lot of upfront money. I knew I needed to sell my photographs so at least I'm not losing money. The last thing I wanted to do is lose a job I can probably never go back to and get into debt. I wanted to make it a successful business and my idea of success was not losing money for the next five years.

I was very lucky, I had a tremendous amount of success for a beginner in my first year. I was involved in multiple assignments, I was lucky enough at that time to be teaching, people were buying my photographs, I was getting published and things just flew! Even though my target for year one was not too loose money, I actually made some money, enough to try another year and then another and well, here we are now".

Announcing the winners of All About Photo Awards 2018!

It was a privilege and an honor to be one of the jurors for this new edition of All About Photo Awards 2018. First of all, I can't thank enough Liu Bolin, Eli Klein, Crista Dix, Marco Gualizzini, Elisabeth Mouchy, Ann Jastrab and Michael Itkoff for their patience and hard work. We received more than 4,200 images from around the world and it was a long and difficult task to select the images that would make it to the second round. After spending a lot of time watching the images over and over again we selected around 900 images from 362 photographers. The overall quality was amazing and many more photographers could have been featured in our winners' gallery but in the end I hope you like the ones we have selected. You will also be able to discover new portfolios in the upcoming months, some of them who are not in our winners list but who truly deserve to be showcased on All About Photo. Thank you to all the participants, I wish you all the best with your future projects and hope that you will send us more projects in the near future.
