SINCE SEEING YOU

Since Seeing You is an observation of the lingering experience of the final week of my mother's life. She rarely let me photograph her, except in those last days when she changed her mind and without any hesitation, gave her permission and blessing. During that time there was a quality of acceptance and ease within and around her. After she passed the nurses seemed in a rush to cover her body and take her away. I wondered why. It seemed so natural that I would want to stay with her for a while. Since that final time, I have taken a lot of photographs in nature; immersed in its aliveness, decay and wild beauty. I feel her spirit in the tilting trees or when there is a light rain. At times, the memories of her gently fade out and blur, only to return as a wind that changes direction, in a wave of strong emotions.The pictures on view are a selection of what I hope to have published as a book. Because of the ephemeral feeling in the imagery, I imagine that the solidity of a book would balance this transient quality by giving it a structure and pace that would be tangible.

In this moment of great uncertainty and turmoil, these online Solo Exhibitions aim to continue to connect audiences and artists, building on our beliefs that access to art and culture is a right and not a privilege and that artists' voices should be heard. It is a platform to help photographers pursue their visions, their dreams and their projects.

The Winners of AAP Magazine #17 are revealed!

I am delighted to reveal the names of the winners of AAP Magazine #17 Portrait!

These amazing photographers come from 12 different countries, their work reflects their personal aesthetic and unique approach to portrait photography.

Portraits have never ceased to inspire photographers since the invention of photography in 1839 but it was at first a mere replica of the paintings' aesthetics for the sole privilege of the upper class. Since then, portraits have become an ordinary object present in every household but it also became a photographic genre at the crossroads of the artist's sensibility and technical approach. Portrait photography is both a celebration of the subject and an art in itself and all the submitted worked proved just that.

A portrait is much more than just a physical representation of a person or its face. A good portrait must capture a privileged moment, when alchemy happens, allowing the photographer to capture the personality of the subject. The selected photographers showcase innovative approaches to portraiture alongside striking traditional work.

All About Photo Presents The Winners of All About Photo Awards 2021 - The Mind's Eye

 The prestigious photo competition, “All About Photo Awards 2020, The Mind’s Eye,”, organized by All About Photo is pleased to reveal the winning photographers of 2021.

A panel of 10 expert jurors including: Keith Cullen (Founder Setanta Books), Denis Dailleux (Photographer, Agency VU’), Stefano De Luigi (Photographer, VII Agency), Monica Denevan (Photographer, Winner All About Photo Awards 2020), Claudine Doury (Photographer, Agency VU’), Ann Jastrab (Executive Director, Center for Photographic Art), Sandrine Hermand-Grisel(Photographer, Founder All About Photo), Stephan Vanfleteren (Photographer, Writer & Art-director of Hannibal Books), Hiroshi Watanabe (Photographer), and Alison Wright (Photographer & Author) have selected the 40 winning photographs.

The 6th annual competition attracted an extremely high caliber of photographers from around the world. The winners come from 23 different countries and 5 continents. 

2020 was a peculiar year with the COVID-19 pandemic, of course, but also with the Australian and US West Coast Wildfires, the popular uprisings in Hong Kong, Columbia, Chile and Venezuela, The Black Live Matters protests, the explosion in Beirut...  Yet the idealism of past years has not been completely tarnished and the images submitted show the rich diversity of our planet, with photographs ranging from a Porter in Kolkata to the human cost of COVID-19 in Indonesia. From underwater life in Japan to Irish Travelers. Or from a detention center in Latin-America to a fishing boat in Vietnam... Crossing borders, spanning cultures, and traversing the most remote corners of the world, the featured photographers all captured life in its most vivid forms.

The winner and Photographer of the Year 2021 is Tom Price (UK) with his image "Porter" taken from a series of surreal portraits, featuring 'relocated' porters from Kolkata, as a reflection on the experience of migrant workers.

The second-place winner is Joshua Irwandi (Indonesia), the third-place winner is Joseph-Philippe Bevillard (Ireland), the fourth-place winner Javier Arcenillas (Spain) and the fifth-place winner is Javier Vergara (Chile).

Scott Bourne wrote: “Where light and shadow fall on your subject - that is the essence of expression and art through photography." 

Mysterious, magical, intense, timeless, sometimes nostalgic... mastering the shadows in photography is an art in itself. It is a story in its own right, a unique form of expression. 

For this 16th edition of AAP Magazine, we were looking for the poetry as well as the power of shadows and the twenty-five winning photographers did just that!

The winning portfolios are diverse and imaginative in their approach to the theme. Each image has a story to tell and reflects a unique form of expression.

All About Photo Announces the Winner of the March 2021 Solo Exhibition

LOSING OUR MINDS

My series "Losing our minds" was taken at the beginning of the corona crisis 2020: a bizarre, but extremely fascinating period. Man loses his mind because a stormy situation presents itself that is new and challenging for him. Fear tries to overpower him, he freezes, starts to reflect on the world and on the punishment that Mother Nature seems to send us. We have treated our Mother Earth too lightly, demanded too much of her in our egoism. Reflection is necessary.

I want this poetic-philosophical reflection to speak through my images in these corona times. In my series "Losing our minds" I consciously show only young people who are looking for themselves, for the meaning of life and the relationship between man and nature. It is sometimes difficult to draw the line between realism and surrealism, between reality and madness. Are those figures real or staged in my photos? Sometimes we as a layman have the same reaction: is this the real world in which we live or is this madness / surrealism? These are photos of Hassidic Jews who can enjoy their freedom in an unorthodox way in the storm (of their lives) and escape the lockdown.

My images however try to transcend the anecdotal and in that sense they not only reflect what is going on with the corona crisis in 2020, but they try to be a universal expression. They could take place anywhere in the world and not just on the Belgian coast where these photos were taken in one day and within one hour. The young people in my photos are of course a symbol of change / revolution / going against the tide. They symbolize spring that starts anew every year. Within these young people you see in my images "Einzelgänger", those who only try to compete against society. Some idealists throw themselves completely and don't care about anything. Their slogan is straightforward. More than ever we realize through this crisis that man is a social animal and it is difficult to stay in his room. In group we are strong, we go for it and we climb the highest mountains. In this case: dunes of course.

Ultimately, we are so dependent on the forces of nature that we cannot help but be guided by the flow. I consciously placed "Statues in the storm" (photo 11) last because I think the symbolism is the greatest: people become statues, as it were, puny - sometimes pathetic - beings in the universe. The wandering man looking for his own way, reflecting how to deal with himself, the others and the earth.

All About Photo Announces the Winner of the February 2021 Solo Exhibition

All About Photo is pleased to present Desert Dweller by Daniel Skwarna.

DESERT DWELLER

Slab City sits on the leftover infrastructure of Camp Dunlap, a WWII marine base activated in 1942 as a training camp for action in North Africa. The base also provided training areas for army troops under General Patton, a bombing range for planes from a nearby Marine Air Station, and a staging area for smaller Marine groups. It was deactivated in 1945. When the land was returned to the State, only the concrete slab foundations remained to float on the shifting sands. Slabbers have been shifting with these sand for decades; building, scrapping, repurposing, surviving, dying. They’re a motley crew, as varied as anywhere else. The year-round population is modest. Roughy fifty stay through July and August when temperatures are mercurial and even rattlesnakes seek the shade of campers. Their ability to endure inhuman conditions year after year is matched only by a shared distaste for the gridded boiler plate of city life. Many are on SSI, SSDI, or just plain broke. Modern American pioneers, claiming their slab and declaring themselves master. A free range society of feral folks occupying a chunk of desert in Southern California. Slabbers have different reasons for coming here and staying. Many are transient, coming for the warmth in winter. Some seek anonymity, others to forego the rat race. Veterans with PTSD neighbour hippies, meth heads, and Oxycontin addicts. Survivalists and religious men come to the desert to test themselves as their forefathers have for millennia. Felons hide deep in the Slabs under cover of creosote to evade the authorities. Average American families that never recovered from the Great Recession or want to stretch their retirement funds. Artists, musicians, philosophers. Few of them enjoy the conveniences we take for granted. There is no free drinkable water, no tap to turn. Slabbers can filter the East High Line canal, brown with farm runoff, or take from the faster moving Coachella Canal feeding Palm Springs and Los Angeles. Otherwise, you pay local suppliers. Garbage is either kept by Slabbers (for future reuse) or dumped for lack of municipal pick-up. Solar panels and deep cycle batteries provide power to run fans and swamp coolers in the hottest months. Sanitation varies from rvs to composting toilets and gopher holes. To each his own. There is a cost to living free.

The twenty-five winning photographers did just that and captured life in towns and cities around the world. 

For this 15th edition of AAP Magazine, we were looking for the heart and soul of a society and its people. Whether photographed in the countryside, or in an urban setting, the images we chose reflect the diversity of the photographers background and approach to street photography. Thanks to their ability to grasp decisive moments, they allow us to become a spectator of their wanderings, a curious observer of people's behavior.

Life is a stream of colors. Red, blue, yellow, and all the possible combinations in between surround us everywhere.

For this 14th edition of AAP Magazine, we were looking for submissions of works of art in which the only limit to creativity was the photographer's imagination.

We chose twenty-five photographers (from 11 different countries and 3 continents) for their different approach to color photography. Their color palette is diverse: bold, vibrant as well as pastel, or even monochromatic but each time their conscious choice adds to the photograph's esthetic appeal and convey sensory pleasure.

All About Photo Announces the Winner of the October 2020 Solo Exhibition

 All About Photo is thrilled to present Zaido by the Japanese photographer Yukari Chikura.

Part of the exclusive online showroom developed by All About Photo, this exhibition is on view for the entire month of October 2020 and includes twenty photographs from the project published this year by Steidl.

This project is Yukari Chikura's preservation of the 1300-year-old Japanese ritual festivity "Zaido." Following a series of tragedies, including her father's sudden death, her own critical accident, and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, Chikura recalls how her father came to her in a dream with the words: "Go to the village hidden deep in the snow where I lived a long time ago." And so with a camera in hand, she set off on a restorative pilgrimage to northeast Japan (the first of numerous journeys), which resulted in the creation of her book.

Chikura arrived at the village, surreally silver in the snow and mist, and there discovered Zaido, where inhabitants from different villages gather on the second day of each new year and conduct a ritual dance to induce good fortune. The performers dedicate their sacred dance to the gods and undergo severe purifications. Combining photographs of snowscapes that border on abstraction with images of the intricate masks and costumes of Zaido, Chikura depicts the cultural diversity of the participants as well as their common bond in creating collective memory and ensuring the survival of this ritual.

I am delighted to reveal the names of the 25 talented photographers who won "AAP Magazine #12: B&W"

For this 12th edition of AAP Magazine, we received a record number of submissions from all over the world. The winning photographers come from 11 different countries and 4 continents.

Their work reflect the large variety black and white photography can offer. Documentary, portrait, travel, street, wildlife, abstract and fine art are all represented in the winning portfolios. 

Regardless of the genre of photography, the selected projects all have different approaches to the unifying theme of black and white. Using film, analog or digital photography, deep blacks or light grays, each photographer showcases a unique point of view. The chosen work successfully incorporates the literal and metaphorical dichotomy of black and white. 

Mysterious, intense, timeless, at times nostalgic, black and white is magical for anyone who loves photography. Clearly black and white photography continues to hold a prominent place in our hearts and imaginations!

All About Photo Announces the Winners of the AAP MAGAZINE #11 - Travels Contest

I am delighted to reveal the names of the 25 talented photographers who won "AAP Magazine #11: Travels"

Out of thousands of entries, these remarkable photographers come from around the world with 17 different countries being represented.

Their work allows us to escape for a few moments in these difficult times to other beautiful places around the world, allowing us to dream of a better future.

From Ethiopa's church in the sky, to the misty mornings of China or the streets of Nizhneangarsk in Russia, we virtually travel to the four corners of the earth.

All About Photo Announces the Winners of the AAP MAGAZINE #10 - Portrait Contest

I am delighted to reveal the names of the 24 talented photographers who won "AAP Magazine #10: Portrait"

These amazing photographers come from 14 different countries, their work reflects their personal aesthetic and unique approach to portrait photography.

After spending a lot of time looking at hundreds of submissions, Sandrine Hermand-Grisel, Editor of All About Photo, considered multiple unique and timely work. Many projects were worthy of winning, but in the end she chose to showcase innovative approaches to portraiture alongside striking traditional work. She was amazed by the quality and the wide range of work submitted.

Discover the Winners of All About Photo Awards 2020 - The Mind's Eye

The prestigious photo competition, All About Photo Awards - The Mind's Eye, organized by All About Photo is pleased to reveal the winning photographers of 2020.

A panel of 7 expert jurors including Elizabeth Avedon (Photography book and exhibition designer, independent curator and writer), Laurent Baheux (Photographer, UN Ambassador for the environment and active protector of wildlife), Alex Cammarano (Founder and CEO of Daylighted), Julia Dean (Photographer, Educator, Writer, and Executive Director/ Founder of the Los Angeles Center of Photography - LACP), Sandrine Hermand-Grisel (Photographer, Founder & Editor of All About Photo), Ann Jastrab (Executive Director, Center for Photographic Art, Carmel, CA), and Juli Lowe(Director, Catherine Edelman Gallery) selected the 40 winning photographs.

The 5th annual competition attracted an extremely high caliber of photographs from around the world.

The majority of this year's submissions were color photographs and yet 4 of the 5 first place images are B&W. Unlike previous years, it also seems that the jurors were more attracted to beautiful and soothing images rather than violent and unsettling ones. Perhaps a subconscious need has arisen in each one of us to escape the terrible events that are happening in the world right now. It is also worth noting that photography is often perceived as an art form still dominated by men, but this edition proves the contrary! Four out of the top five prizes have been won by women photographers!

The winner and Photographer of the Year 2020 is Monica Denevan (USA) with her image Across the River, Burma from the series Songs of the River: Portraits from Burma.

The second-place winner is Gabriele Galimberti (Italy), the third-place winner is Rebecca Moseman (USA), the fourth-place winner Nadia De Lange (Switzerland) and the fifth-place winner is Nicole Cambre (Belgium).

Beverly Conley (USA), Anne Berry (USA), Lori Hawkins (USA), Deb Young (USA), Lynzy Billing (Philippines), Margaret McCarthy (USA), Jo Ann Chaus (USA), Brooke Shaden (USA), Jennifer Garza-Cuen (USA) and Elena Paraskeva (Cyprus) are also amongst the winners.
